less acoustic spaces (2019)

This duet for double second steel drums and violin started as part of a workshop delivered by the excellent percussionist Russell Fisher to the Yale composition department. Where many of my pieces are rooted in an exploration of a deeply personal experience or research-oriented theme, this one was just pure fun with sound! I strove to interleave these two very different instruments in an intricate, slightly goofy, slightly stuttering ballet. It’s short, punchy, and ends with a cute surprise. The title is a play on Gérard Grisey’s Les Espaces Acoustiques.
